| Hair
problems in males
Hair is a precious part of beauty that nature has bestowed upon human
kind. A healthy scalp full of hair can be equated to Kashmir full of Chinar
whereas a bald scalp can be compared to the equally beautiful terrains
of Leh Ladakh.
Those who prefer the mountains full of Chinar now have the option of hair
transplant with them.
Hair fall has a profound psychological impact on a person. Many patients
feel less attractive and confident as a result of losing their hair. In
the overwhelming majority of males with hair loss, the cause is hereditary
androgenetic alopecia, more commonly known as “male pattern baldness.”
Other common causes are alopecia areata, chemotherapy, traction alopecia
and telogen effluvium.
Androgenic
alopecia
runs in families. It can be either from the maternal or paternal side.
It might start from the third decade of a person's life. If medicinal
treatment is started early, one can enjoy hair for as long as desired.
But one should be clear that medicine needs to be continued till the time
we want to avoid hair fall. Very effective medicines are available both
for application and oral treatment. In few resistant cases we need to
do mesotherapy to get the desired results.
In those patients who could not start treatment well in time, we need
hair restoration or transplant along with medicinal treatment. Not everyone
is a good patient for hair transplant surgery. Patient selection is very
important for acceptable good results. Ideal patients have
• Thick & sufficient hair at the back of the scalp.
• Mild to moderate baldness.
• Curly hair are perfect for surgery.
• If hair transplant is done for androgenic alopecia it is better
to start medicinal treatment few weeks prior to hair transplant.
Hair
restoration surgery (FUT)
offers a permanent, living solution to lost scalp hair. It provides own
natural, growing hair, which needs no more care than the ordinary washing,
styling, and trimming. Hair transplantation involves removing permanent
hair-bearing skin from the back and/or sides of the scalp (donor area).
Then, using magnification, the tissue is dissected into follicular unit
grafts (containing 1–4 hairs) and multi-follicular unit grafts (containing
3–6 hairs each). These small grafts are then meticulously planted
into the bald or thinning area of the scalp (recipient area). The grafted
hairs will often start to grow by 10–16 weeks after the procedure
and will continue to grow for most, if not all, of one’s life. The
main reason for widespread acceptance of FUT is in ensuring a totally
natural result.
Another
method which is gaining popularity these days is taking very thin 1-3
hair micro punches from back and sides of scalp and planting them in the
front bald area. It further improves the results and reduces the loss
of hair follicle. As these small punches heal they hardly leave any scar.
It should
be clear in mind that all techniques of hair transplant use existing hair.
The goal of hair replacement surgery is to make the best use of your existing
hair to produce natural-looking, permanent results.
Hair transplant is different from hair implant
techniques as in transplant hairs are natural and they grow like the remaining
hair on the scalp.
Even extremely bald men still have a ring of hair around the back and
sides of their heads. These hairs are not lost during the balding process
because the follicles themselves are not affected by DHT, the hormone
that causes the follicles in the front and top of the head to shrink in
size and stop growing hair. In hair transplantation surgery a piece of
this skin containing these follicles is removed from the back and sides
of the head. The follicles are then extracted from the surrounding tissue
and then are reinserted into the balding areas of the scalp. Since the
follicles themselves are not affected by the hormone DHT, they continue
to grow hair even after they have been moved from the back of the head
to the front of the head. Hair transplant at our practice entail up to
4000 grafts that can be performed in a single session. While hair transplant
is a meticulous and time-consuming work, the terrific, natural results
we achieve are worth it. We can complete the entire hair replacement process
in a single day using local anesthesia.
Recently transplant
surgery has advanced in the form of follicular unit transplant to create
a more realistic looking hair line. One should always remember though
hair transplant procedure gives impressive results but it may still not
be your ideal.
Alopecia
areata
It is an autoimmune disease. It can occur at any age in both males and
females. It is very common problem and occurs almost 25% people in their
life time. It starts with single or multiple round to oval patches of
hair loss on any body part. It doesn’t itch and there is no associated
pain, redness or scaling.
